About Del Valle
Del Valle is an unincorporated community in southeastern Travis County, approximately 10 miles southeast of downtown Austin along State Highway 71. The broader Del Valle area (ZIP 78617) has grown rapidly and is home to approximately 29,000 residents per the most recent American Community Survey estimates, driven by the arrival of Tesla Gigafactory Texas, Circuit of the Americas, and continued expansion around Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
The community takes its name from the Santiago Del Valle land grant of 1832. Santiago Del Valle, secretary of the Mexican government of Coahuila y Texas and president of its Congreso Constituyente in 1825, received a ten-league grant of approximately 44,000 acres in what is now southeastern Travis County. He never settled the land, selling most of it through intermediaries to Thomas McKinney and Michel Menard. The community was established in the mid-1870s, and a post office opened in 1878 with William Givens as postmaster. By the mid-1880s the village had 50 residents, three churches, a school, a steam gristmill, a general store, and two cotton gins.
Modern Del Valle sits at the center of one of the Austin metro's most active economic corridors. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport occupies the former Bergstrom Air Force Base site (decommissioned 1993, reopened as a commercial airport on May 23, 1999) directly adjacent to the community. Circuit of the Americas, the first purpose-built Formula 1 circuit in the United States, opened in 2012 on a 890-acre site. Tesla Gigafactory Texas opened on April 7, 2022 on a 2,100-acre site and has drawn thousands of jobs to the area. Real estate in the Del Valle corridor ranges from established rural acreage to new master-planned subdivisions along Highway 71 and FM 973.
Transportation access is anchored by State Highway 130, a toll route that opened in stages from late 2006 to 2008 along the western edge of the community, providing a north-south bypass of I-35 that connects Del Valle directly to ABIA, downtown Austin via SH 71, and points north toward Round Rock. State Highway 71 runs east-west through the community, FM 973 provides north-south connectivity to US 290 and the Manor area, and FM 812 and FM 1625 serve the rural eastern and southern portions of the area. The community sits along the lower watershed of Onion Creek, a 79-mile tributary that enters the Colorado River just northwest of Garfield in southeastern Travis County.
Living in Del Valle
Del Valle is an unincorporated area without a traditional town center or municipal services — Travis County provides governance, roads, and law enforcement. Day-to-day life is shaped by proximity to the Austin airport corridor and the rapid commercial development along Highway 71 and FM 973. Groceries, retail, and dining are concentrated along Highway 71 and in the nearby Southpark Meadows commercial district to the west.
The area's major draws are its relatively lower land costs compared to central Austin, direct access to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, and proximity to major employers. The drive to downtown Austin is approximately 10 miles via Highway 71 or US 183, typically 15 to 25 minutes outside rush hour. Many Del Valle residents work at the airport, at Circuit of the Americas, at Tesla Gigafactory Texas, or at other employers along the southeastern Austin corridor.
Del Valle ISD serves the area with approximately 11,811 students across 15 campuses. The district's enrollment is 81.7 percent Hispanic and 85.1 percent economically disadvantaged. Del Valle High School enrolls approximately 3,589 students. The district benefits from a commercial tax base anchored by ABIA, COTA, and Tesla, creating an unusual fiscal dynamic for a historically rural school district.
Outdoor recreation centers on McKinney Falls State Park, a 744-acre park at the confluence of Onion Creek and Williamson Creek, approximately six to eight miles west of Del Valle by road. The park offers upper and lower waterfalls on Onion Creek, nine miles of hiking and biking trails, 81 campsites, six cabins, and historic sites including the Thomas F. McKinney homestead ruins.
