Sherwood Forest Faire is one of the largest Renaissance fairs in Texas, held on 23 acres at 1883 Old Highway 20 in McDade. The faire runs weekends in March and April with 170 artisans, 150 daily live shows, jousting, falconry, and over 100 permanent buildings. A Celtic Music Festival is held in December.
An annual community festival held the second Saturday of July since 1948 celebrating the area's watermelon farming tradition. The festival features a parade, car show, street dance, seed-spitting contest, live music, and a watermelon queen. Proceeds fund teacher grants and McDade ISD scholarships.
McDade is approximately 35 miles east of Austin on U.S. Highway 290, typically a 40 to 55-minute drive. Elgin is about 10 miles west, and Bastrop is approximately 14 miles southwest.
McDade was founded in 1869 as a Houston and Texas Central Railroad town, named for James W. McDade of Brenham, a major stockholder. The community grew as a railroad shipping center for cotton and agricultural products. The McDade Pottery, established in the 1880s, gained statewide recognition. The population has grown from 685 in 2010 to 720 in 2020.
